Name Francesco Cappelletti

Born June 8th 1978

Nationality Italien

Country of entry Italy

Francesco Cappelletti is a professional Ocean Yacht Master with commercial endorsements based in Tuscany. He has delivered yachts throughout the Mediterranean, Western Europe and across the Atlantic and also worked as a charter skipper and sailing instructor. Before becoming professional he sailed the West coast of Italy and Islands in a 20ft boat without any electronics or autopilot.

Francesco says of the GGR: “After learning about the Race, I found myself thinking how important the accounts from the original Sunday Times Golden Globe Race have been during my training as a seaman. I used to sail without an autopilot or electrical instruments, and with only a Tilley storm-lamp as my light source. Sailing round the world alone in this basic way is a must-do-in-lifetime goal. I see the 2018 GGR as a chance to pay tribute to my core passion for the sea.”

Francesco has selected the sloop rigged Endurance 35 007 built in 1975 by the French shipyard Stratimer. He expects this rugged design will perform well in light winds and be one of the better suited for rough downwind conditions expected in the Southern Ocean. He particularly likes her spacious living quarters, sheltered cockpit and clean deck. Her refit over the 2017/18 winter included replacing her decks, reinforcing the bow area, converting her to a ketch and fitting new bowsprit, chain plates and rudder. Francesco used crowd funding to raise the money for her new masts. He expected to relaunch 007 and complete initial trials in the Mediterranean prior setting sail for Les Sables d’Olonne in May.

Francesco Cappelletti has arrived yesterday night safely and sadly in Salvador di Bahia…well done and keep the dream alive for another round!! all the very best from the GGR Team and the future…sail safe always #GGR2018.

September 7th 2018 12:00 AM

During his weekly Sat phone call today, he says that he is mostly going downwind but not today..very hard to balance the boat. Francesco is heading to Brazil to stop in Salvador de Bahia. Gustavo Pacheco is helping him to organise his arrival. His ETA is approximate because he is not going straight at the moment but he expects to be there by next monday. He is glad that he made that decision, otherwise it would have been 25 days of struggle to continue south without windvane and reach CapeTown. He says that he needs to settle down and clear his mind before being able to make any decision about the future.

September 3rd 2018 12:00 AM

FRANCESCO CAPPELLETTI, our navigator “Carozzo” has finally made the decision to head towards Brazil, after the damage of the lower part of its windvane.

August 31st 2018 12:00 AM

Francesco has just broken his Windvane, the same type as Philippe Pêche and Nabil Amra. The regulator snapped almost at the same spot, although he tried to consolidate the system considering Nabil’s damage, before his late departure mid july from Les Sables d’Olonne. Francesco is fine, he is confident and the boat is well balanced. He is still hesitating in between heading for Brazil with favorable winds but involving a detour after changing the windvane; or going south to Cape Town despite light and capricious winds, but allowing less detour if he wants to keep going on the GGR route, and also a real opportunity to repair in Cape Town. Our sailor “Carozzo” continues its journey not without troubles since the beginning of his Adventure, but without being discouraged! To be continued…

August 17th 2018 12:00 AM

The “Caruzzo sailor” is enjoying his ride down south, even heading to the winds on an average of 3 knots, still 500 NM behind Suhaili’s imaginary route on the tracker back on the 1968 Golden Globe. He sounded happy this morning on the sat phone ringing in to GGR Race control for his “Courtesy Weekly phone call”. He recorded an audio file message in Italian, for all his followers back home. He is more than à 1000 NM away from Antoine Cousot, closing the back of the GGR fleet.

August 10th 2018 12:00 AM

Francesco gave us his friday’s courtesy sat phone call and he seems to be enjoying fully the beginning of his adventure ! Slowly settling in, and trying to work out the best setting with his new sails on the different winds and weather conditions to make his boat more efficient. He is really happy about his windvane. The morale is UP !
