Loïc Lepage bought the Nicholson 32 Mk X yacht Laaland back in 2015 with a plan to have one of the best-prepared yachts in the race. After an 18-month refit, he sailed her between May and August 2017 from Quiberon to the Azores and back prior to completing his jury rig test.
Loïc has more than 20,000 miles of solo sailing under his belt including three trans-Biscay and four transatlantic crossings.

He says of the GGR: “I’m very happy to be part of this legendary race. When I was 16, I devoured books written by Bernard Moitessier and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and the dream of completing a solo round-the-world race myself has remained a passion of mine.”

In 2011, Lepage came close to realising his dream, and after two years of preparation, he set out in his First 35 class yacht. “Unfortunately, 10 days out, my boat hit a container and sank within 2 hours, but the experience has not changed my motivation. The GGR is the perfect race to realise a dream.”
Loïc successfully raised money to support his campaign by the unusual method of Crowd funding.

Loïc Lepage has chosen to race the Nicholson 32 Mk X yacht Laaland, one of the smallest yachts in the fleet. Having completed the trials in the summer of 2017, she returned to the shipyard at Vannes to have a crash bulkhead fitted, leaks sealed and new radio equipment fitted. Loïc aimed to have the boat back in the water to complete sea trials in May 2018 and will then sail to the UK to take part in the Suhaili 50 Falmouth Parade of Sail prior to the start of the GGR from Les Sables d’Olonne on July 1st.

UPDATE….Just received a call from Australian Maritime Safety Authority – AMSA JRCC that Loïc Lepage has been successfully transferred to the Bulk Carrier SHIOSAI with Francis Tolan standing by in ALIZES II. He has no injuries. Full report as it becomes available. GGR thanks all those involved for such professional dedication and passion to secure Loic from a very difficult situation. WE just spoke to his family and they are eternally grateful to everyone. Fantastic news!!!!. CODE RED Vessel LAALAND Loic Lepage EPIRB ACTIVATED In DISTRESS.At 1810UTC 20th Loic rang GGR to advise he was concerned about 30l of water every 10-15 minutes entering the boat from an area that he cannot easily access. His pumps are working and he can keep up with the flow for now. GGR then contacted JRCC in Canberra Australia to advise that Loic will activate his EPIRB in the next 15 minutes. After considering options he has decided to activate his EPIRB. Nearest GGR Entrant with an engine is Itvan Kopar 480 miles downwind to the east. Strong westerly winds will mean it is unlikely he will be able to haed west for the next 24 hrs. There may be other yachts to the west of LAALAND in an event called the LONG ROUTE. GGR are endeavouring to make contact with the roganisers to discover the MSSI Number of thoise yachts and their positions from AIS

CODE ORANGE Loïc Dismasted APP> 600 Miles SW of Perth. NO ASSISTANCE REQUIRED, AT 1300UTC 20th Loic VESSEL LAALAND rang GGR to advise he had been dismasted in 25kt SW wind and 3mtr seas. Mast broke in two places. While cutting it away one piece may have damaged the hull in the area of the integral water tank in the keel. A little water appeared but the flow has stopped. The mast is now clear of the hull. It is 1900hrs local time and night. He will now rest and wait for morning and will ring GGR control again, then subject to weather will build his jury rig and attempt to sail to Fremantle.He has NOT asked for any assistance. All safety gear is secure.The weather is rapidly deteriorating during the next six hours and may build to 50-55kts for a short time. Sea will build to 5-6mtrs. 6 Hours later will slowly decrease, on 21st at 1200UTC will be back to 20-25kts from the SW. GGR have delivered a weather forecast to Loic. GGR is closely monitoring the situation.

LOIC has made good progress this week with 120 to 130 NM per day and is sliding east in a good southerly wind that will gradually turn to the west.
He gave us this morning the latest news : “temperatures falling down to 11°; still missing an appropriated headsail; crosswinds in a moderate sea; I am going down to the 39° south; but not pushing the boat to much; 2600 NM remaining until Hobart so about 25 days, arriving around 11/12/13 November; I will run out of coffee, biscuits and chocolate but water supply is ok; the engine has its moods; but I’m fine even if it’s long … “

The Breton obviously seems to enjoy his crossing of the Indian Ocean, just starting the second half of it, on the smallest boat in the fleet.
LOIC should not stop benefiting from good downwinds, and has a good tracking route since its new departure from Cape Town.

After a laborious week stuck in the choppy seas, in the back of the fleet, Loïc is now heading a little further south under the 37th. He will escape the worst of the bad weather coming onto the rest of the fleet this week. Very happy this morning during his call with a good SSO wind, on a sunny day wearing even his sunglasses, after a fortnight of gray weather since Cape Town. Laaland, drying out in this nice weather, after the humidity of the last days, is now crossing the French waters at the NNO of Amsterdam island. The hydrovane works well and remains “his faithful companion”. Loïc also tells us that he has finally seen his first Albatross, symbol of the Great South, and that he has plenty of time to read his thrillers.

The arrival of a good depression in two days should allow the rear pack to nibble more miles, which will not be displeasing to LOIC LEPAGE (Chichester category), slightly stalled and stuck on the edge of a large band of high pressures.

The Breton LOIC LEPAGE (Chichester class) obviously is taking pleasure in sailing in the Indian Ocean. He should benefit from strong winds in the coming days but again, punctuated by calm areas that will slow them down sharply.

Loïc (via satellite) “Wind sea block normal route apart from that OK” At the rear of the fleet, in the Chichester class, LOÏC is idling on the edge of a windless zone that will soon be ahead of Laaland to give way to a moderate northwesterly wind.During his Sat call, Loïc tells us that he has some problems with some headsails being damaged, which forced him to sail with less suitable and efficient sails. Having not seen the sun for almost 6 days, it was difficult for him to make a sextant vision update this week. “Menu of the day: Close hauled under a grey sky sprinkled with rain”.He is still more than 4000 miles from the Tasmanian coast, more than a month of navigation to go. Its water supply is at best with an extra 60L harvested in recent days. A few leaks around his mast feet which moves à bit and that he has not yet successfully sealed, are bringing a little water to the front cabin, which requires him to operate the pump from time to time.

Behind, LOIC LEPAGE, as well as ISTVAN KOPAR, SUSIE GOODALL, TAPIO LEHTINEN and will have to face a much more violent system. Fortunately, they are located, following the recommendations of the organization of the GGR, high edge of the gale. But their relatively northern position should also preserve them from the bulk of the swell and the wind.

“Climbing the back of the Indians swells goes on”LOIC LEPAGE, has benefited from better weather conditions than the leading group, even if the swell generated by the gale of this weekend is still consistent. Alongside TAPIO LEHTINEN and ISTVAN KOPAR and, he is sailing on the high edge of a northwesterly wind system that will become even stronger before waning as he moves south-west … Wind directions will allow him to progress towards the direct route, fully East. “second saucisson thank you girls!”

The calm before the storm… Loïc #Lepage (via satellite) “Sailing a bit more quietly, drying and doing DIY”. He says this morning that his forestay sail got ripped up.
Loïc seems in shape and has made a great come back since his stop in Cape Town. He took advantage of good winds and crossed the current Agulhas at its narrowest part, not to have to fight against this strong current for too long. He not only caught up with the fleet, but passed Igor and is now only 280 NM away from Tapio and Istvan. But a very large storm will hit the rear of the fleet arriving from the west-southwest and could raise a huge sea, with swells that should exceed 10 meters …and last for the next 48h.

As for LOIC LEPAGE, he arrived in Cape Town on Friday night, where he found ARE WIIG! No doubt the Breton sailor had to appreciate breaking his loneliness and sharing with his unfortunate colleague. He will soon return, in the Chichester Class.

Loïc was going fast approaching Cape Town where he will stop for a few days. He has just arrived around 4pm local time, welcomed by the Port Master who organised his arrival ! He needs to replenish the water, check his rigging and radio, and to get ready to face the Great Southern Ocean on the smallest boat of the fleet, now alone in Chichester Class when Laaland will slide off again.

The Cape : A direction to which has been gliding LOIC LEPAGE for several days at a good speed, expected this weekend in the South African port. The Breton sailor wants to fill up his water tanks and check his rigging, very sought after in this leg of the South Atlantic. He will also try to repair his SSB radio which isolates him a lot for the moment (impossibility to emit, problems of reception…).”Break at the well at 300 NM of Cape Town a shame but indispensable”. This stop will relay him to the Chichester Class (reserved for those who stopped or break once the rules of the race) but it is probably a wise decision to attack the Great Southern Ocean in the best conditions, especially on the smallest boat of the fleet. No doubt that he will be warmly welcomed by ARE WIIG!

In this group at the end of the fleet, the fastest this morning is the Breton LOIC LEPAGE with 6.3 knots, who pushes hard on his Nicholson 32, the smallest boat in the fleet. He seems to take a lot of pleasure, he who waited for the wind so long! “FINALLY WIND FAVORABLE COURAGE ARE”

Loïc has almost NO water left, NO sun since August 19th to view, and NO more wind either since a few days! No more radio, NORE texting unit working properly ..Fortunately, he was able to pass two freighters for his position, and he thinks he heard Abhilash and Are on the radio session, but can not understand nor communicate with them still having problems with his radios. He is sailing the wrong way, still 1000 NM from Cape Town, which seems to be THE SOLUTION to all these problems !

Loïc Lepage, 8th in overall ranking, is in a hole right now. Indeed, very complicated progression also this morning for LOIC LEPAGE, taped to 1 knot in the wrong direction … Its bows pointing towards the west shows the difficulty that it has to progress in the center of this bubble without wind, still 1000 NM away from the Cape. Still without radio and low on water to Australia, he is one of only two unsponsored #GGR2018 entrants in the simplest boat and sailing in the True Spirit of the 1968 Golden Globe…

Loïc has showed a good progression in recent days taking advantage on crosswinds, installed in a good north-Est breeze which continue to accompany his Atlantique descent.
He wrote that his “HF SSB ANTENNA IN PLACE BUT WEAK WEATHER RECEPTION LAALAND OK”. His radio issue persists related to an antenna and microphone problem and he can not correctly receive the valuable weather information nor communicate with the other entrants, which becomes quite prejudiciable and begins to put weigh on our solitary sailor shoulders.This morning during his Satphonecall to Race Control he has just announced that he is thinking of stopping in Capetown if he can not collect rainwater soon, because he has less than 150L left in his tank!

LOIC LEPAGE, is now in front of ABHILASH TOMY and MARK SINCLAIR, and will benefit from the strong winds in the coming days, which should allow him to catch up a little on the head of the fleet. But he will have to continue to curl Laaland’s route to the East at the risk of catching up with a weak wind zone expanding off Brazil. He wrote that : “Still no water to fill up the tank. Apart from that no pb!”

Loïc wrote this morning that he is at 500 miles from Trinidate island ! Still on a West route option, but slightly on the east of his two racemate, Abhilash Tomy at the front and Mark Sinclair at the back, Loïc sails south and should benefit from stronger trade winds, but a calm zone in coming up for the next few days.On Laaland, he still has not managed to collect more than 20 liters of rainwater since the start of the race, and begins to pay attention to his water consumption. His Radio SSB is still not fixed, which prevents him from communicating with the others daily.

LOIC LEPAGE, not far from ABHILASH TOMY, and MARK SINCLAIR is now out of the Doldrums and is also pointing his bow to the south. Loic is enjoying good winds sailing up to 4/5kts, no doubt happy to be moving again after reading his Tweet comments. He still reports a communication probleme with his radio, related to a technical issue with his antenna and his microphone. He plans to climb up the mast to check the antenna in 8 or 10 days, once the weather conditions will be better for this challenging exercise! Loïc, however, started to fill up its watertanks by collecting twenty liters of rain water in recent days.

Loic, the free spirit of the fleet, has started texting and his messages can be quite poetic. His weekly safety call revealed that he had not had any contact with anyone else in the fleet recently and that his attempts to reach the HAM network had failed. He had elected emotionally about the start and sends a big shout out to all his family and friends that supported him. He had been undecided which side of Cape Verde Islands to go but it is clear now that he is taking a western course.

Loic is sailing well with a solid mid field position. He made the film drop off Rubicon Marina in the dark and is not reporting any problems. Ever the quiet achiever Loic.

Loic is sailing around the mid fleet in one of the smallest boats in the Golden Globe. He and Laaland report to be in good shape with no dramas.

Loic probably doesn’t realize how well he is doing. He might just wake up tomorrow alongside Jean Luc. An experienced sailor he has sailed well from the start and been careful to keep his distance from the wind hole that can extend along the coast.

After several delays, French skipper Loïc Lepage is looking to relaunch his Nicholson 32 yacht Laaland in mid-May and base her in Crouesty prior to a shake-down sail out into the Bay of Biscay and across to Falmouth. Supported by his local cycling club and the Dept. of Mor’bihan, Lepage’s yacht is also carrying a message around the world. Her Race No 56 was chosen because it is the number code for Mor’bihan, Loïc’s year of birth – and the latitude of Cape Horn.

French skipper Loic Lepage says that everything should be ready to relaunch his Nicholson 32 yacht Laaland at the end of April. “The set-up for the race is going well. I’ve just bought new sails, liferaft and beacons and am now gathering food supplies for the race. I will be test sailing in the Bay of Biscay throughout May and plan to arrive in Falmouth around June 8.”
