GGR 2026: Day 1

Summary

The opening miles of the 2026 Golden Globe Race have delivered slow, tactical sailing as the fleet works south-west from Les Sables-d’Olonne into light headwinds.

South-westerly winds of around 10 knots have been almost directly on the nose, forcing repeated tacks and beginning to spread the fleet across the Bay of Biscay. Conditions are expected to become much tougher over the next 24 hours, with headwinds building towards 20 knots and potentially 28–30 knots, with gusts around 35 knots. Seas could build from around one metre to 1.5–2 metres as the system approaches.

The key tactical question is how far north and west the skippers can hold before the front arrives. Boats pushed too far south risk being poorly positioned approaching Cape Finisterre, while those able to stay further north may eventually benefit from a better angle once the wind shifts into the north-west.

Damien Guillou leads the early fleet aboard Solarem, around 73 nautical miles from the start and sailing at just over five knots. Ertan Beskardes, Pat Lawless and Guido Cantini are also among the early front-runners, while Isa Rosli is making impressive progress in one of the smallest boats in the fleet.

Henry Wootton remains well placed, while Matt Woodside’s tracker position appeared artificially low due to an older position report. Gunnar Christensen has spent much of the night tacking into the headwinds, while Etienne Messikommer has been working further south — a move that could become significant as the weather develops.

Pär Nyman remains in Les Sables-d’Olonne after returning to address several issues aboard Lazy Otter, including the loss of a piece of rigging and a possible concern with movement in the rudder.

Once the front passes, conditions should improve rapidly. The wind is expected to swing north-west and eventually settle into strong, favourable northerly winds. The first boats around Cape Finisterre could gain a significant advantage before reaching more established trade-wind conditions on the route south towards Lanzarote.
