42 Days solo around the world by François Gabart puts him half way around the world today on our #GGR2018 fleet time line, yet we are not at the equator and enjoying the serenity of it all... :) Will this Americas cup prototype foil package just launched, become the new game for solo racing around the world ?? or fully crewed IMOCAS?..what do you think? ... See MoreSee Less
With those types of foils I don't think the crewed IMOCA will be able to foil in the open sea I think for the time being we will have the dali foils
In a round-the-world race, what are the odds of NOT hitting a UFO with that thing on the left?
I think it's a fantastic innovation but time at sea will tell brave guys n girls sailor s are the testers of new ideas
There are racers, and there are others for a journey ....what ever the intention...
Not much interested in boats that are so high tech that no-one could build one for themselves. The soul of sailing and of adventure lies somewhere else other than foiling carbon fibre racing yachts.
I am all for pushing technology. There is no comparison you use the correct tool for the job you want to complete. Both versions have different risks.
They have successfully invented a mono that will sail like a Cat. Only one thing to say then, BRING BACK THE CATS !
Just because we can, does that mean we should?
Without innovation we'd all be punting in hollowed-out logs. New ideas push boundaries, attract aspirations, lead to practical improvement in most cases. When I pull up at the lights on the way to the marina, I don't see any F1 cars around me, yet the ABS, traction control and 3 dozen other things long since tested in F1 are on my car, making it more efficient and safer. Racing (cars, boats, anything) has always been a test bed and long may it continue :-D
until the materials technology catches up with the design I suspect that those foils will be no match for the southern ocean... If one of those snaps off you are left with a completely unwieldy boat.
PRB and MATMUT are Breaking Out of the Doldrums today!
Fast times to the Equator one week ahead of SUHAILI's passage time and as fast as JOSHUA (even with the very light winds at the start). PRB - Philippe Péché and Jean Luc Vandenheede today are on stb tack with a breeze begining that will send them through the last of the Doldrums and into the trades. Mark Slats is in a hole and the rest of the fleet is coming down with a good Northerly wind, except maybe Igor and Tapio out to the east with a little less. Tomorrow 23rd, a big hole of light winds opens over the main group, so they will slow down for sure and the leaders will have the strong trades coming up to Meet them from the south and even more so on the 24th. The Doldrums look to be kind to the fleet this year and soon many will be through and wondering how close to the wind they should sail to get south. The trades will be close to the bow until they get south and west. There will be some banging and water on deck for awhile. It will be good sailing though and their next big question is who will meet their first late winter south atlantic low? in three weeks or so and then the great SOUTH! ... See MoreSee Less

LATEST SATELLITE TEXT MESSAGES...the wind may return for JL VDH and Phillipe in the next 24hrs while Mark may be sailing into a hole and ARE looks like he will gain some more..The middle fleet will all close the leaders but then they have the big hole of the Doldrums to come. Tommy finally worked out where south realy is! It is still a small zone of challenging winds this season, so it may be a quick trip south very soon.

BEEN AWHILE! I am in the Canary Islands with Jane and Christophe. We head back to the GGR Office in Les Sables D’Olonne tomorrow. So would you like to read something interesting, even fascinating? When you finish reading this, scroll down the News section and read some of the very first newsletter...
Well done team. A great job. I have seen the effort and commitment first hand. My wife and I are GGR addicts. Our kids are threatening to take iPhones off us!
